Air quality in Chinese cities has improved in recent years, however further improvement is needed. The air quality in 2/3 of the cities still does not reach the Level 2 standard of air quality. Suspended granules in the air are the chief cause affecting the air quality. These granules are largely found in northern cities in the following regions: North China, Northwest China, Northeast China, Middle China, the east of Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality. Among these areas, some cities are seriously polluted with sulfur dioxide. The south suffers primarily from acid rain.
