The Bayerische Staatsballett has acquired a reputation as an open-minded, dedicated group of artists prepared to commit themselves to the nineteenth century classics with the same conviction as to works of the different modern styles and most recent trends. Ivan Liska took office as Director of the company in September 1998. "Raymonda", which is the swan song of Marius Petipa and indeed the essence of our contemporary concept of classical ballet, highlights a wide variety of dance styles, a brilliant score by Alexander Glazunow, and a plot that delves into deep emotional conflicts as the lovely Countess Raymonda is torn between the virile Count Jean de Brienne and a seductive Saracen prince. With the jewels of Petipa choreography unchanged, the opulent new production by Ray Barra electrifies today's audience by human aspect of Raymonda's destiny. The ballerina, featuring high technical, stylistic as well as convincing acting ability, well convey the heroine??s deep inner conflict.
