In 2000, the 2nd China Shanghai International Arts Festival entered new millennium, bringing in the fantastic and surprising art performances in Shanghai.

In 2000, the 2nd China Shanghai International Arts Festival entered new millennium, bringing in the fantastic and surprising art performances in Shanghai. Held from 1 November to 1 December 2000, the festival staged 54 theatrical works from 20 foreign countries and overseas regions as well as 10 provinces of China. The average attendance of performances was as high as 96.3%. About 300,000 audiences watched the performances.

The qualities of being international, classic and national were fundamental principles for the choice of programs the festival organization committee held to at 2000 edition. A series of classical works highlighted at the arts festival included spectacular production Aida, Soul presented by Joaquin Cortes Ballet Flamenco of Spain, concerts given by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, UK, the dance drama, Wild Zebra and Peking Opera, Prosperous Years of Zhen Guan in Tang Dynasty.

In addition, Shanghai Art Fair, Spirit-Shanghai Biennale 2000, the 3rd Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Art Festival, and Shanghai Asia Music Festival 2000, these high-spirited art activities were all successfully held with no exception.

And during the festival, the 2nd International Performing Arts Fair took place, only to achieve a great success with 88 cooperation contracts sighed.

Colorful public cultural activities went well and were welcomed warmly such as, Music Fireworks Carnival, the Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival, the Chinese and foreign Artists Tour to the Communities and the 2nd China Shanghai International Festival of Arts Knowledge Competition.
