The date of the interrogation hasn't been revealed by the tribunal.

Sources said Saddam was being questioned about alleged crimes related to the massacre of at least 50 Iraqis in 1982 in the Shiite town of Dujail, north of Baghdad. The killings were allegedly in retaliation for a failed assassination attempt against him.

It's thought the first charge for alleged war crimes Saddam will face will be related to the killings in Dujail.

On the streets of Baghdad, some people welcomed the upcoming trial of Saddam.

"He deserves to be put on trial. He harmed many people, he destroyed societies, he deprived us of so many rights."

"The tribunal will make so many facts clear. We don't know facts about Saddam. He might be right or wrong and the tribunal will make the right or wrong clear."
