Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao says China hopes the United Nations will lead the post-war reconstruction of Iraq.

He says this is the only way to bring long term stability to the Gulf region. China will continue to discuss this matter with Security Council members.

He says as a permanent member of the Security Council, China will keep on making efforts to help restore peace and stability in the Gulf region. He also points out that China has always strictly abided by Security Council resolutions and hasn't provided any weapons to Iraq since 1990.
