Nine-time Olympic gold medallist Carl Lewis has been fined 500 dollars and given three years of probation following a high-speed freeway crash.

Lewis pleaded no contest last weekend to a charge related to an early morning accident in his brand new car eight months ago.

The US athletics legend was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community work and attend close to two dozen alcoholics anonymous meetings.

The 41-year-old had a glittering athletics career that spanned two decades and included Olympic gold medals in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

He is one of three athletes ever to win gold in a single event four times. (Zhao Pingping)
