A Chinese Canadian who killed and kidnapped his neighbor has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Canadian court.

Zhang Tianyi met his neighbor Sun Peng in 2013 while they were both living in a wealthy district of Vancouver.

Zhang, who was 20 at the time, had a Canadian green card and had settled down with his family. Sun, of the same age, had been studying in Canada for five years.

Sun became mistrustful of Zhang, who never revealed where he studied or what he did for a living. He boasted that his father was a senior official in Shanxi province although this could never be confirmed.

Sun ceased contact with Zhang until the latter invited him to attend a party celebrating his new-born baby on September 27, 2015.

Out of politeness, Sun agreed.

What Sun didn't know was that Zhang's wife had been pregnant for only 39 weeks and that he had been on the lookout for a wealthy person to kidnap for some time.

After entering Zhang's villa, Sun was taken to a cellar where he was tied up by a gang of people who'd been hiding there.

That evening, the kidnappers called Sun Peng's father Sun Cang, and demanded he pay 12 million yuan (1.74 million US dollars) ransom.

Sun Cang called the police, and on their advice, paid 1.7 million yuan. The police told Sun Cang to withhold some of the money to give them time to track down the kidnappers.

To begin with, Sun Cang could hear his son's voice pleading for help, but after several calls, the kidnappers refused Sun's demand to talk to his son, and Sun Cang suspected that his son might be dead.

In fact, Sun Peng had been killed only eight hours after being kidnapped.

Four suspects were arrested on September 29 as they attempted to dispose of Sun Peng's body.

Initially the Canadian police told Sun's family that Zhang would be tried for first-degree murder, but earlier this year the prosecutor reached an agreement with Zhang's lawyers that he would face the lesser charge of manslaughter.

On February 21, Zhang was found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Seven Canadians were reportedly involved in kidnapping and murdering Sun Peng, and moving his body, but only Casey James Hiscoe was sentenced to seven years behind bars for kidnapping.
