Asian Winter Games opens, China wins 2 medals

The 2017 Asian Winter Games officially opened on Sunday afternoon in the Japanese city of Sapporo.

32 National Olympic Committees from Asian countries and two guest teams from Australia and New Zealand have provided around 1,200 athletes for the 7-day Games.

China has sent a 236-member team to compete in all 64 events under the five categories, including skating, skiing, biathlon, and ice hockey. Short track speed skater Wu Dajing served as the flag bearer leading the Chinese during the opening ceremony.

Some events have already taken place, with medals going to six giant slalom snowboard athletes who triumphed in the competition in the morning.

Zang Ruxin and Gong Naiying of China won the silver and bronze medals respectively on the women's front. The champion is Japanese athlete Eri Yanetani.

The medals on the men's side went to South Korea and Japan.

In ongoing events, the Chinese men's curling team beat Chinese Taipei 7-3 for their second victory on Sunday.

On Saturday, the opening day for the women's ice hockey event, China and South Korea each scored a 20-0 victory.

The Asian Winter Games were first held in 1986 in Sapporo.

Both China and Japan have topped the gold medal list three times in the event's history. China ranked No. 4 in the last Games in 2011.

The Chinese Olympic Committee said they regard the current competition as a test of athletes 'preparation for the Winter Olympics next year.
