Nokia's first smartphone for Android and the first smartphone under the Nokia brand after the company sold its handset unit to Microsoft in 2014, goes on sale on Thursday exclusively through Chinese internet retailer JD.com.

The first batch of more than 9,000 Nokia 6 smartphones reportedly sold out within seconds.

HMD Global, the Finnish company which owns the rights to use Nokia's brand on mobile phones, unveiled the Nokia 6 in China earlier this month, in the hope of winning back the Chinese market.

"We intend to move with speed to establish a position as a player in the smartphone category," said HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela, speaking to Xinhua earlier this year.

Nummela also said that the company hopes to unveil further products in the first half of the year.

The Nokia 6 smartphone is priced at 1,699 yuan (about 248 USD) and black is the only available color.

Also, only those who have registered for the sale are allowed to purchase it.

The handset features a 5.5-inch screen, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and is powered by a Snapdragon 430 processor.
