Chinese experts have helped the country of Burundi hit a rice yield record in Africa, as the average yield of every mu, or around 666 square meters, of all the four rice varieties imported from China reached 725.3 kg in 2016. That figure is more than three times the average production in Burundi. The peak per mu yield of the imported rice has reached 924 kg.
China has sent three groups of agricultural experts to help Burundi, with 70% of its population living in poverty, make agricultural policies and provide technical guidance.
Sun Jian, a counsellor with the Chinese Embassy in Burundi, told China Radio International that the Chinese hybrid rice will help alleviate food shortages in Burundi. In the near future, China will build an agricultural technology demonstration center in Burundi to further provide technical guidance and support.
