A musical Little Princess, a novel by American writer Frances Hodgson Burnett, will debut in a children's theatre in Beijing on New Year's Eve, Dec 31.

Musical¡¯s director Zhao Yu said though seemingly the main target audience is young girls, the story has a universal appeal to both girls and boys when it tells how important friendship is, and indicates the ways how people should tackle many kinds of relationships.

The main character, little princess Sara, is the daughter of a rich Captain from India, and she comes to Miss Minchin's girls' school in London. Sara immediately becomes the best student. She helps everybody and loves everybody.

Her father dies suddenly after going bankrupt, and the princess suffers a lot. But Sara's optimistic spirit is not broken, and her true friends never leave her in her rough times.

The upcoming musical is an expanded version of the short story. Meanwhile, Zhao Yu also unveiled the most impressive scene within this play:

"Sara's father bought her a doll. Sara gives the doll a name "Emily". When she feels very helpless following her father's death, she stares at Emily, singing an aria. In fact she sings the aria to give herself an encouragement, which I think is an impressive and probably the most touching part of this play."

Wang Kun, who has a decade of experience in stage productions, is the script writer. At a media briefing recently held in Beijing, he said opera, music and dance are all combined together to help vividly portray Sara's ups and downs.

The China National Theatre for Children will continue a showing of this musical in 2017.

A classic children's tale, Little Princess, has been adapted many times for the big screen.
