Northern China is experiencing the worst smog of the year, causing disruption to the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Schools, airports and expressways have shut services due to poor visibility.

The Beijing municipal environmental protection bureau has introduced a spate of measures, including vehicle restrictions, to help cut pollutant emissions.

China's Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs director Ma Jun says the measures have achieved results.

"The emergency response this time is a large-scale action, mainly because the air pollution is no longer an issue of a single city. We must take concerted measures in a region to control the pollution. This is a good attempt. The ultimate goal is to identify the source of the smog and take more targeting and accurate measures of pollutant reduction," said Ma.

On Monday, the PM2.5 readings in many cities exceeded 500 micrograms per cubic meter.

The readings in most affected areas even exceeded 1,000 by the afternoon.

According to forecasters, the smog is expected to clear by Thursday.
