Following a 12-city roadshow, "Masters in the Forbidden City", a documentary film looking at the relics and antiquity restoration professionals, is finally to hit theatres on Friday.

Based on a three-episode TV documentary broadcast in January 2016 on China Central Television, the film version of "Masters in the Forbidden City" will have a new storyline.

While the TV episodes put emphasis on craftsmen's spirit, the film version explores the theme of inheritance.

Friday would also witness the screening of two huge-budget productions, Zhang Yimou's Great Wall and up-and-rising director Cheng Er's the Wasted Times.

Xiao Han, the director of Masters in the Forbidden City, responded by saying he paid more attention to how many people really care about documentary rather than box office revenue.

He added he just wants documentary films to be screened in theaters, rather than "to be played on internet or cellphone".
