A world's premier pipa virtuoso, Wu Man, recently staged an unprecedented concert in Beijing, by melding sounds of China with a western string quartet.

A performance of hers 'Red Lantern' won applauses during the concert. Red Lantern was adapted from the most famous scores of Chinese cinema ĘC Raise the Red Lantern by the eminent Chinese composer, Zhao Jiping.

Wu Man's link with movies dates back to Ang Lee's 1993 film The Wedding Banquet, as well as his 1994 film "Comer, Beber, Amar", in which there are scenes of Wu Man playing China's age-old lute, the pipa.

Also during the concert, she played not only Chinese folk songs, but folk songs from Uganda and the songs from Appalachia mountain areas in the US.

For over 20 years, Wu Man has made it her mission to introduce the little-known pipa to western audiences and to perform western genres of music on it.
Her Beijing concert is part of the ongoing Beijing Music Festival.
