China Central Television's 2017 Chinese New Year gala has begun its 100th-day countdown, as the show will be broadcast live to the world on Chinese New Year's eve on January 27th.

Since 1983, CCTV has put on the annual television event to help usher in each lunar New Year in China, the most important holiday of the year in the country.

The variety show, now usually lasting over four hours, typically consists of song and dance performances, comedy skits, acrobatics, magic tricks and Chinese opera. Over the years, the show has grown to become one of the most watched, if not the most watched, TV programs in China.

For this year's gala in February, nearly 700 million domestic viewers tuned in via their TV sets, while more than 1 billion viewers globally watched the broadcast live via various platforms.

Combining celebrity power and new faces, the show offers something to viewers of all generations. The gala's program selection process is also highly competitive, as performers must go through rounds and rounds of reviews to be included in the final program. The program for next year's show is reportedly being finalized, and the show's production team has kept the details closely under wraps.

2017 will mark the Year of the Rooster, based on the Chinese zodiacs.
