A video showing animal protection volunteers humiliating and exposing a man who allegedly abused animals for profit has gone viral and sparked controversy.

In the video, the man is forced to sit on the ground naked, while animal protection volunteers scold him, poke his jaw with a stick and pull his hair. The video also shows volunteers holding banners which say, "Appealing for the country to enact animal protection laws. There is no time to delay."

The incident occurred in the downtown district of Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to a report by The Beijing News.

After learning the man had been allegedly filming himself abusing his dog and attempting to make a profit by selling the videos, the animal protection volunteers tracked the man down and beat him in his rented room, the report said.

It added that some animal protection volunteers tried to initially turn the man over to police, but failed as there is no specialized law for the protection of pets in China.

Despite this, according to law experts, the animal protection volunteers should not have beaten the man or exposed him by shooting the video, and they may have committed the crime of insult.

The man is now in local police custody. An investigation into the incident is underway.
