Swedish Chinese associations have held a grand celebration of the Chinese Duanwu or Dragon Boat Festival in Stockholm, with Russian, Greek and Ukrainian cultural associations also participating.

The celebration began with the beautiful Chinese songs Mo Li Hua or Jasmine Flower and Tianbia.

Chinese Councilor Guo Yanhang attended the concert.

"The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated around the time of midsummer. The performances here are excellent."

The most impressive was the Chinese Tai Chi and Martial Arts performance by Master Xing Weitao and his students from the China-Europe Cultural Association. They won warm applause from the audience.

Blind Chinese Flautist Wu Jing and her Swedish counterparts also participated in the concert.

The traditional Chinese dancing and costume shows performed by Sweden-China Cultural Association gave the audience a great impression of Chinese music and costume, as well as the good manners of Chinese women in Sweden.

The President of the Hunan and Hubei Association Liu Fang said the purpose of the concert was to celebrate a traditional Chinese festival, keep alive Chinese traditions and enhance Chinese culture.

The reading program of poems vividly showed how people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. In China people make Zongzi, a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings, to remember the Chinese ancient poet Quyuan who lived during the Warring States period.

The period was an era in ancient Chinese history, that began in 475 BC, when the king ruled merely as a figurehead and a number of states fought with each other. It ended when the Qin state emerged victorious in 221 BC, which lead to the first unified Chinese empire known as the Qin dynasty.

Quyuan lived during this turbulent time and his famous poems such as the Chu Ci anthology, encouraged many people to seek the meaning of life.

The performances by Russian, Greek and Ukrainian cultural associations were also very impressive, and showed their traditional costumes and folk dances.

The festival was jointly organized by the Hunan & Hubei Association and the Swedish Chinese Cultural Exchange Association.

A total of 400 people attended the concert.
