Amid the controversy caused by some parking spots designated for female drivers in Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang province, an official with the highway service area in question has denied accusations of gender discrimination.

Pan Tieyong, director of the Tonglu highway service area, has stressed that the move is aimed at better serving female drivers and ensuring their safety.

Painted in pink, the eight reserved parking spaces are 1.5 times larger than typical ones, which are particularly devised for inexperienced female drivers.

Observers say as demand for parking space usually grows on the weekends, many male drivers have been parking their cars in these spots.

Pan indicated the special service has been well received by female drivers, and the highway service plans to expand the program.

Pan added other countries and regions had previously launched similar female-drivers-only services.
