Kenya destroys nearly all of its elephant ivory and rhino horn stockpiles in a ceremony at Nairobi National Park on April 30, 2016. This act sends a strong message to the international community that the illegal trade in wildlife, which is pushing several species to the brink of extinction, cannot be tolerated. In Kenya, more than 100 tonnes of elephant ivory and more than one tonne of rhino horn were burned on Saturday.

The stockpile is believed to be the largest of its kind ever destroyed.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta lit the stockpile in Nairobi National Park, in a dramatic statement against the trade in endangered species.

Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta says a new generation of poachers poses a great threat.

"The proceeds of violence and death are recycled into crime, threatening not just our national heritage, but also the stability of our states and the safety of our communities. We, in Kenya, have been spared some of the worst of this violence. And indeed, there are indications that our elephant numbers are recovering. That is only the more reason to aggressively protect the survivors of this horrific war and to do what we can to ensure that never again will our elephants be attacked in this way."

Poaching is a big problem in Africa, with over 30,000 elephants killed each year.
