Renowned Peking Opera artist Mei Baojiu, the ninth son of artistic master Mei Lanfang, passed away on Monday at the age of 82.

Mei Baojiu had dedicated his life to the artform and had pledged to carry on the performance skills developed by his father Mei Lanfang.

Mei Lanfang was one of the most respected Chinese artists of the 20th century and creator of the "Mei School" style of Peking opera.

"I've presented again the repertoire of my father to the world exactly the way they are performed by my father; I feel I have not wasted this life of mine."

Born in 1934 in Shanghai, Mei Baojiu began to learn Peking Opera at 10 years old, gave his first performance at 13 and had performed with his father since he was 18.

Mei linked his happiness on stage, to the public appreciation of traditional Chinese culture and the arts through continued performances.

"The happiness centers on having the artistic styles of my father going on and on for more and more people to see it; it's the kind of happiness you cannot get with money. No matter how many houses or how much land you offer, I would not trade this happiness with you. The enthusiasm from the fans is precious and hard-to-get for me."

Mei Baojiu said said he wanted to make the art form thrive among the next generation.
