Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony Held in Greece

(Lighting ceremony of the Olympic flame)

The Olympic flame is once-again lit.

The official lighting ceremony has taken place in Olympia in southern Greece, the birthplace of the Games.

The ritual itself involves lighting the torch using a concave mirror to catch the sun's rays.

A 6-day torch relay is now underway in Greece before the flame is moved to Brazil for this summer's Olympics.

In a move to promote solidarity in a Greece - and broader Europe - divide over the influx of refugees from the Middle East and North Africa, this year's relay in Greece will see the torch passed through a refugee camp in Athens.

Kevin Whitney is with the British Olympic Association, which also took part in today's ceremony as the previous holder of the Olympic torch.

"This year, in particular, the refugees are involved, so that hopefully, more leaders in Europe will pay attention to the plight of these poor people and do some more help for them, so important. And running the flame, which is a very symbolic image, will promote the idea of peace and hopefully will help these poor people. So this year is very, very important, above the previous years, I think."

Meanwhile, Rio 2016 organizers have confirmed the Olympic flame will not stay at the Maracana stadium after its lit to open the Games in August.

Instead, the torch will be lit at the stadium to open the Olympics, and then be moved to a different location in downtown Rio.
