Britain must renew its submarine-borne Trident nuclear weapons system if it is to maintain its "outsized" role in world affairs, U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter said in comments published on February 13, 2016. Thousands of protesters marched through London on Saturday to oppose the renewal of Britain's Trident nuclear weapons system.

The protests come ahead of a final government decision on whether to replace the current generation of submarines that carry the nuclear warheads.

Britain's Ministry of Defence says getting the new submarines will cost 31 billion pounds, or about 43 billion US dollars, over a 20-year procurement programme.

That is on top of another 10 billion pounds for unexpected cost increases.
