The International Monetary Fund on Friday announced that it selected Christine Lagarde to serve as its leader for a second five-year term.

She was the sole candidate nominated for the post of the IMF chief.

The IMF said in the announcement that the decision was taken by consensus among its executive board.

Lagarde made remarks about her intentions for her next term.

"I will make sure that the IMF remains a strong institution and will continue to be open, capable of adjusting to changes, capable of understanding the challenges that lie ahead of us; not just the short challenges as we see them developing, but also the longer term challenges that we see in the works but not yet totally developed, and yet will affect significantly the economy."

The IMF praised Lagarde's leadership during her first term for strengthening the Fund's ability to support its members with policy advice, capacity building, and financing.

Lagarde, a former French finance minister, took over as head of the IMF in 2011 following Dominique Strauss-Kahn's resignation amid scandal.
