A newly re-published book suggests China's controversial track coach Ma Junren employed performance-enhancing drugs as part of his training regime.

The book "Investigation into Majiajun" was first published in 1998, but a chapter about doping was deleted for fear of causing bad publicity at the height of the coach's popularity.

He and his pupils were sometimes described as the Ma family army for their stunning performances in domestic and international events.

Ma has always strongly denied any allegations of doping, although 6 of his athletes were dropped from China's team for the Sydney Olympic Games after failing blood tests. As a result, he was dropped as a coach.

The book was written by Zhao Yu and was based on interviews with the team in the spring of 1995.

Ma retired as deputy director of the Liaoning Provincial Sports Bureau on December 1, 2004.

He has always denied accusations of doping.
