The US State Department said for the first time on Friday that "top secret" information had been sent through Hillary Clinton's unsecured computer server when she served as Secretary of State.

The Department's spokesman John Kirby said 7 email chains will not be made available to the public due to classified information.

"I can confirm that as part of this monthly FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) production of former Secretary Clinton's emails, the State Department will be denying in full seven email chains found in 22 documents representing 37 pages."

Kirby added the department had upgraded the classification of the emails at the request of US intelligence services. He said the emails had not been classified at the time they were sent.

The announcement came just three days before the Iowa caucuses, when the first votes are cast for the presidential nominations. Clinton is seeking the Democratic nomination for the upcoming election.

Clinton's campaign responded by calling the email review process "overclassification run amok", adding all the emails should be released.

Clinton served as the US Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. Over 13-hundred of her emails have been released under a federal court order.
