El Nino Storms Erode Residential Buildings in California

Continuous El Nino storms in the US state of California have caused building erosion and forced residents from their homes.

The city of Pacifica is about 24 miles south of San Francisco. City officials have declared a number of residential buildings near the ocean uninhabitable.

Local resident Michael McHenry says the storms have put his building at severe risk.

"A couple of weeks ago I had a place that I loved to live. It's nice and quiet, beautiful, serene and almost isolated but not too far. Since all the storms have started hitting the place, it is literally falling off the cliff, and last weekend I was sufficiently not comfortable to the point where I didn't get any sleep for almost two and a half days and I can't live like that."

Pacifica declared a local state of emergency last Friday. The city says it began to see storm-related damages last December.
