Much of the eastern and northeastern regions of the US are bracing for a snow storm that could be the most powerful in years.

A blizzard slammed into the Washington area Friday afternoon. The US National Weather Service said it could bring up to 76 centimeters of snow to the region. The storm is expected to head east on Saturday afternoon to Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

On Friday, Republican presidential candidate and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie took a break from his campaign and returned to his home state.

"Now, I have signed the state of emergency, which gives me certain authorities to be able to close roads and do other things. It is going to bring heavy snow to us. Most of that heavy snow will be in the south and central part of the state. National Weather Service now saying it could be up to two feet, could be as small as a foot in those areas. In the northern part of the state, we're looking at anywhere in some areas from six inches up to twelve inches."

Emergency officials have been planning for days while the storm approached.

About 63-hundred flights scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled in the New York and Philadelphia areas.

It's estimated around 25-million people in 20 states are in the direct line of the storm.
