Chinese President Xi Jinping has held talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Saturday.

The two sides have agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership to promote bilateral relations to a new high and better benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping said the two countries have been consistent in supporting each other and achieving win-win cooperation.

He emphasized China hopes for the smooth implementation of the Iranian nuclear deal and is willing to work with Iran in promoting cooperation in politics, economy, trade, energy, infrastructure, security and culture.

Xi Jinping said China will push forward cooperation with Iran under the framework of "Belt and Road Initiative", and establish a stable long-term cooperative relationship in the energy sector.

Rouhani, for his part, said Xi Jinping is the first state of head to visit Iran after the implementation of the landmark Iranian nuclear deal.

He believes the visit will be a milestone in the history of bilateral ties between the two sides.

He also expressed gratitude for China's contribution to the resolution of Iran's nuclear issue and says that Iran is willing to actively take part in the "Belt and Road Initiative".

Xi Jinping is also due to meet Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during his state visit to Iran.

It is the first state visit to Iran in 14 years by a Chinese head of state, and also President Xi's first ever trip to the ancient country.

The Chinese President will conclude his five-day, three-nation tour of the Middle East on Saturday night.
