Bad weather conditions are expected to hamper the search for 12 US Marines missing at sea, after two marine helicopters collided on Friday near Hawaii's Oahu Island.

US Coast Guard spokesman Lieutenant Scott Carr said authorities only learned of the crash after it was spotted by a civilian.

"We did not receive a mayday call. The Coast Guard was notified by a civilian on the beach who had seen the aircraft flying and then saw them disappear. They did see a fireball and then notified the Coast Guard and then subsequently we got a second notification within just a few minutes of a report of a flare so it was a flare and a fireball. Were they one in the same? Were they different? We don't know."

Ships and aircraft from the coast guard, US Navy, as well as the local police and fire department are currently searching for the missing.

Rescuers have spotted debris off Oahu island's north shore but did not find signs of passengers.

The two Marine helicopters were on a routine training mission when they collided.
