An angry German politician sent a bus carrying Syrian refugees to Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin on Thursday, to protest against her open-door refugee policy.

Peter Dreier is the district administrator of Landshut in the German state of Bavaria. As one of the organizers of the trip, he says he had previously voiced his opposition with Merkel.

"I told the chancellor in an open letter three months ago that our capacities would be exhausted. I am always in favour of putting these people up in a humane way. Not in temporary shelters, for months in gymnasiums or anything like that. We simply cannot provide humane accommodation at this rate and in these numbers anymore. That's why we need to put a foot down. "

Dreier called the trip "an act of desperation", adding he had warned of Merkel about his plan last October and notified her office about the trip on Wednesday.

The bus carried 31 male Syrian refugees. Some have criticized the move as an exploitation of those on board.

More than 1 billion migrants reached Germany last year, and large numbers are still streaming in.

Bavaria has served as a main entry point for the arrivals.

Merkel has resisted capping the number of incoming refugees and migrants.
