Authorities in the Belgian capital Brussels on Wednesday called off the city's traditional New Year's Eve fireworks display for fear of a militant attack.

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors said two people suspected of plotting an attack in Brussels on New Year's Eve had been arrested during house searches in different parts of the country.

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur decided with Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon not to have the celebrations on Thursday evening.

Pablo Saccomano working at Club La Vilaine talked about the cancellation.

"I think people want to celebrate actually. People are looking forward to go out, still. We are going to have some security measures, we are going to watch out for that and be on the look out but I really believe that the people from Brussels need to go out party and need to gather, as well, and to bond together."

The two people arrested are likely to appear in court on Thursday.

They belong to a motorbike club whose members are mostly of North African origin.

Brussels last cancelled its New Year fireworks in 2007, after a plan was foiled to free Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi, who was convicted of plotting to blow up a military base.
