Asia's longest and highest steel suspension bridge was opened to traffic on Thursday in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

The 2,188-meter-long Qingshuihe bridge is expected to improve transportation between the provincial capital Guiyang and its neighboring cities and counties.

General manager of bridge construction, Zhang Shengli, said workers were now busy adding the finishing touches.

"Now we are doing the decoration job, just to refine some small attachments on the bridge, such as the forepart of the bridge and its surface."

Zhang added the bridge will shorten the distance from Weng'an County just across the river to Guiyang from 160 km to just 38 km.

"There is a grand valley to pass to reach the other side of the river. And it took us three hours by a Land Cruiser. Now three minutes are enough, and we don't need to drive too fast."

The bridge cost a total of 1.54 billion yuan, and took two years to build, and is part of the efforts to improve the infrastructure in the mountainous province.
