A British man is claiming to be the first person to row solo and continuously from North America to Australia.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that 53-year-old John Beeden arrived in the city of Cairns on Sunday.

Beeden spent 209 days at sea after setting off from San Francisco in June.

Beeden says his arrival date was delayed, but he was happy to be alive.

"To be the first person to achieve something on this scale is incredible really, and I can't... I haven't processed it yet. But, and now knowing how hard it was, I thought I was going to be here mid-October and it was going to be hard work, but, just like the Atlantic, it wasn't going to try and kill me, but it tried a few times."

Beeden's journey covered 7,400 nautical miles, or more than 13-thousand kilometers.

Beeden's wife Cheryl was in Australia to greet him.

"Incredible, I'm kind of speechless I think. Been living with it for seven months, knew he could do it, always knew he could do it. You know, he's an amazing guy, he's different than a lot of other people, he'll always fight to get the mile when he's having a bad day. He's always out there, be the last one in, he'll always be rowing. So for him to arrive, always knew he could do it, it just took a lot longer than we expected and just glad that he's home and safe."

The Ocean Rowing Society says nine others have rowed solo across the pacific. The last such feat was accomplished 5 years ago by British woman Roz Savage, who managed to reach Papua New Guinea.
