More than 100 thousand people had been evacuated from the border areas of Paraguay, Urugay, Brazil and Argentina, as a result of severe flooding.

Carlos Bogarin lives in an area affected by the floods in Paraguay.

"This situation really pains me. Not because of me, I have the means to survive, but you see elderly people, old men and women, carrying their belongings over their heads, it's very sad."

Paraguay is the most affected country, with over 90 thousand people having to flee their homes.

Officials at the country's emergencies office have predicted that the level of the Paraguay River might continue to rise in the coming days.

The Paraguayan government has declared a state of emergency in its capital Asuncion and seven other regions in order to free up funds to help those affected.

Leaders from other affected countries have also vowed to provide aid to these areas.

There is no official death toll so far, but there are reports that several people have been killed by falling trees in the storms.

At least four people have also reportedly been killed in Argentina and Uruguay due to the storms and floods.

The authorities have blamed the heavy rains that have caused the floods on the El Nino weather system.

The U.N. weather agency, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said last month that this year's El Nino effect is the worst in more than 15 years.
