Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the international community to support Afghanistan during the transitional period.

He made the statement in a joint news conference with Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani on Thursday in Turkey's capital Ankara.

"The International community should not repeat their mistakes as they did in the past and should not leave Afghanistan alone in it's upcoming ten years transitional period. They especially should maintain their support to Pakistan in terms of development and ensuring security."

He also noted that the trilateral meetings between Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey are important, especially against terrorism.

For his part, Afghan President Ghani said that an agreement is needed to combat extremism, particularly in Islamic countries.

"Afghanistan's neighbor states support regional cooperation in order to ensure security in Afghanistan. I want to thank Turkey for their effort during the trilateral meeting and I hope, the meeting will be beneficial for the region's security."

Turkey, along with Germany and Italy, decided to keep their deployments in Afghanistan at current levels, while the US government decided to prolong its 14-year-old military presence there in October.

Germany, as the top NATO-country contributor, has around 850 troops in Afghanistan, followed by Italy with 760 and about 500 for Turkey, according to the latest NATO data.
