The World Food Programme says its expanded its humanitarian response in Iraq as new areas near Sinjar and Anbar province have become accessible.

A large number of people of Yazidi ethnicity have taken refuge in Mount Sinjar after the Islamic State militant group attacked their homes in Sinjar.

The U.N. agency said it is one of the first humanitarian agencies to enter Mount Sinjar following the liberation of Sinjar City. They are providing food aid to the displaced people living in temporary shelters on top of the mountain.

According to the World Food Programme, the displaced Yazidi live in very harsh conditions at high altitudes.

WFP spokesperson Marwa Awad said the conditions are especially difficult for women.

"The psychological pain and suffering that these women have gone through is beyond description and WFP is doing its best by providing food to these families to ensure that they have the necessary nutrition to keep going."

The World Food Programme also delivered food aid to the thousands of Iraqis displaced in Anbar province after the Islamic State's advance into the city of Ramadi.

The WFP said it urgently requires 45 million US dollars to continue supporting internally displaced people in Iraq, and 25 million US dollars to support Syrian refugees in Iraq from December to May 2016.
