Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), speaks at a press conference at the headquarters of the IAEA, in Vienna, Austria, Dec. 15, 2015. Board members of the United Nations nuclear agency on Tuesday adopted a resolution to close the investigation into whether Tehran once had a nuclear weapons program, upon a review of Iran's implementation of its commitments under a nuclear deal endorsed by the UN Security Council in July. Iran will start cutting back on its nuclear activities in the coming weeks. The move is part of an agreement it reached with six major world powers earlier this year.

Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi made the announcement on Tuesday.

"Iran has already started some preparatory work for the implementation of its voluntary measures, nuclear related voluntary measures, and we are intending to complete this process within two to three weeks. So accelerate the implementation day as soon as possible."

Six nations, including the US and China, agreed in July to lift international economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities.

Iran's cutbacks will have to be first verified by the UN.

In keeping with the recent deal, the IAEA on Tuesday closed its investigation on whether Iran had previously developed a nuclear weapons program.
