When it is completed in 2016, the five hundred meter aperture spherical telescope (FAST) will be the world's largest, overtaking Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory, which is 300 meters in diameter. The construction of China's mega radio telescope has entered the final stage.
Technicians installed and tested the "retina" of the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, on Saturday.
They lifted a 30-ton feed cabin above a half-finished dish-like reflector measuring 500 meters in diameter.
Once completed, the cabin will be suspended 140 to 160 meters above the reflector made up of over 44-hundred panels.
Construction on the mega radio telescope started four years ago, with an investment of 1.2 billion yuan or nearly 200 million U.S. dollars.
