How many different ethnic groups are there in China? Two, three, maybe four? In fact, the Chinese population is made up of 56 distinctly different, integrated ethnicities.
Over 90% of China¡¯s people are Han Chinese. The minorities include the Zhuang, Manchu , and Hui people. There¡¯s even an unofficial Jewish minority and a group of catholic Portuguese speakers who¡¯ve lived in China since the 16th century. They all have their own local dialects or languages, cuisine and customs. The Miao people are talented silversmiths and wear elaborate silver headwear. And all 56 groups are represented throughout Chinese society.
