The parents of two school boys drowned in a local reservoir in southwest China's Yunnan Province is seeking compensation from the local water company, which is managing the reservoir.

Their two sons are among the 5 schoolmates killed while swimming in the reservoir near their school in the city of Gejiu earlier in June.

The parents have filed a lawsuit against the water company, asking for compensation of 480 thousand yuan, or some 75 thousand U.S. dollars.

They believe the water company failed to fulfill its duty to ensure safety including setting warning signs to keep the students from nearby school from the potential danger.

They add that the relevant workers also failed to stop the children from swimming there.

However, the water company has later filed a countercharge against the parents, demanding compensation of 8900 yuan, or nearly 1400 U.S. dollars, claiming the kids' bodies have polluted the water.

They say the parents failed to fulfill their duties as guardians of the children, leading them to swim in the reservoir, a source of drinking water for all the citizens, and the company itself has set up very clear signs and notices forbidding swimming.

They add that many citizens dare not drink the water after the tragedy and thus the two kids' drowning has caused a disorder on the normal water supply of the city.

The local court held a hearing last Friday but a final verdict has yet to be made.
