155 Detained Loggers Arrive at China-Myanmar Border
   2015-07-31 01:50:38    CRIENGLISH.com      Web Editor: Li Linxi

Chinese nationals, who were jailed for illegal logging, walk out of Myitkyina prison after being released during an amnesty in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, north of Myanmar, July 30, 2015. Myanmar freed some political prisoners and 155 Chinese citizens jailed for illegal logging in an amnesty for nearly 7,000 people on Thursday, a move that could ease diplomatic tensions with influential neighbour China. A total of 6,966 prisoners were pardoned including the Chinese citizens held in Kachin state, of which 153 were given life sentences last week that prompted a diplomatic protest by an "extremely concerned" China.[Photo: cfp.cn]

A group of 155 Chinese jailed for illegal logging in Myanmar has arrived at the China-Myanmar border following a massive amnesty announced by the Myanmar government on Thursday.

Media reports revealed that the hand-over process has already finished and the group will be sent back home from the border town in Yunnan.

The group is among 7-thousand prisoners released by the Myanmar government under the amnesty.

The Chinese nationals were detained earlier this year and handed lengthy prison terms just over a week ago.

Many were given 20-year prison sentences under a decades-old law in Myanmar connected to the destruction of public property.

The stiff sentences for the loggers prompted official complaints from the Chinese government.
