The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named an asteroid after the late Chinese singer Yao Beina.

According to the latest circulars from IAU's minor planet center, asteroid number 41981 has been named as 41981 Yaobeina.

The center says in the circulars that Yao Beina (1981-2015) was a talented and courageous Chinese singer, who won numerous awards for the best Chinese pop song performance. One of Yao's famous songs, "Fire of the Heart," was about the reflections on her battle with breast cancer. When she died she donated her cornea.

The asteroid runs between the Mars and the Jupiter. It was discovered in 2000, by William Kwong Yu Yeung, a Hong Kong-born Canadian amateur astronomer.

William Kwong Yu Yeung has found and named many other asteroids such as 64291 Anglee, which was named after director Ang Lee and 42295 Teresateng, which was named after famous Taiwan singer Deng Lijun or Teresa Teng.

According to IAU, as minor planet discoveries are confirmed, they are given a permanent number by the IAU's Minor Planet Center, and the discoverers can then submit names for them, following the IAU's naming conventions.
