Health authorities are investigating food products made near Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant that have been found in Taiwan.

Officials say around 300 food products with falsified Chinese-language labels have been found on-sale in Taiwan.

Taiwan has banned food imports from Japan's Fukushima and other four prefectures since 2011 after a massive earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Taiwan's food and drug chief says it is not clear whether the importers misunderstood the codes used on Japanese packaging to indicate place of origin or knowingly falsified the information to dodge the ban.

Chinese-language labels were simply attached overtop of the domestic Japanese labels, but improperly claimed the product had been made far away from Fukushima.
