Pop singer Yao Beina has died from breast cancer Friday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong province.

She was in a coma for days as a result of emergency treatment after the cancer had spread to her lungs and brain. She was kept under observation in an ICU ward at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital.

Yuan Tao, the general manager of the H. Brothers Music group said that the star while conscious had signed up for cornea donation.

Yuan said she had been in a coma after taking a large amount of sedative for pain relief. He also appealed to the media and her fans to allow her family some private time as they dealt with their loss.

The singer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent surgery later that year.

Yao became well-known to the public after she made a series of songs for the hit drama The Legend of Zhenhuan in 2012.

She also presented the theme song of the 2012 film Back to 1942, directed by Feng Xiaogang.

She performed on a number of TV galas, including the 2014 CCTV Spring Festival gala. According to an online CCTV survey, Yao's songs topped the list of audiences' favorite performances during the 2014 Spring Festival Gala.

Yao participated in the reality talent show The Voice of China and became a student of Na Ying.

In September 2013, Yao was invited to become the image ambassador for the China Pink Ribbon Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of breast cancer. She posed nude for a photo-shoot in Trends Health magazine with other seven Chinese female celebrities.
