At least 35 people have been killed in a stampede in Shanghai, after huge crowds of revelers gathered to celebrate the New Year.

Local authorities say there are 25 female among the deceased whose ages range from 16 to 36.

The local government says the stampede happened at Chen Yi Square, near the Bund Origin area, at around 11: 30 in the evening.

Another 48 people were injured.

The cause of the stampede is still unknown.

A witness says that some coupons that looked like "dollar bill" were being thrown from a building's third-floor window near the Bund and people standing along the river bank started to scramble for these coupons.

The injured have been sent to several hospitals for treatment, where relatives of the victims were anxiously waiting for the news of their loved ones.

"I think I saw him being carried away to the hospital but I don't know which hospital. No one has told me anything."

A hospital official is asking people to be patient as they wait for information.

"I don't have information on the persons you're looking for as the injured were sent to several hospitals and there's much confusion. That's all I can say."

The New Year's Eve countdown show at the Bund, where festivities have been held in recent years, was moved to the Bund Origin area last night.

The local government says the move aimed to improve traffic flow.
