China's famous folk vocalist Wang Kun passed away in Beijing today at the age of 89.

Wang was most famous for her interpretations of songs such as "Nanniwan" in 1943 which we just heard.

She also played the leading role, and sang the theme song for the classic Chinese opera, "The White-haired Girl" in 1950.

The opera tells a story which happened before the founding of the People's Republic of China, of a tenant farmer who could not pay debt to his landlord in a village.

The farmer comitted suicide under coercion. His young daughter was taken by force as repayment.

She run away and hid in a mountain, until her hair turned white.

Wang's singing style draws on Chinese folk traditions.

The aged vocalist was planning to hold a concert at the Great Hall of the People next month.
