China on Wednesday opened its first global internet conference in the ancient town of Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province since its connection into the internet two decades ago.

At a ceremony to mark the opening of the first World Internet Conference (WIC), Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai read a congratulatory letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Wishing a complete success of the conference, Xi called for the building of a peaceful, safe, open and cooperative cyberspace in his letter.

The conference, to be held from Wednesday to Friday, will focus on current issues in the cyberspace, including cyber security, online anti-terrorism efforts, mobile network and cross-border e-commerce.

High-ranking political figures and industry tycoons including former Taoiseach of Ireland Bertie Ahern and Alibaba group's Jack Ma delivered speeches at the ceremony.
