The vice-President of China Radio International is calling for a new role to be played in the media when it come to international affairs.

CRI's Washington correspondent Xiao Hong has more.

Speaking to an audience of media professionals from both China and the United States, Xia Jixuan, vice president of China Radio International, says the world presented by the media is somehow different from the one in reality.

"People are not satisfied by media performance as most of the media failed to provide an accurate picture of our world."

He goes on to suggest the reason he feels the media is not doing a good job is beause of a lack of communication.

Allen Pendleton, President of New World Radio Group, has been working for more than two decades to introduce foreign programs into the U.S market.

He says cross-culture and cross-nation exchanges are critical for understanding one-another.

"Knowledge promotes understanding, knowledge dispels prejudice, and knowledge awakens the desire to learn more."
In addition to improving cross-culture communications, Xia Jixuan is also calling for a new type of international news reporting, suggesting the spirit of cooperation is key to facilitating balanced social development around the world.

American University professor Scott Talan has issued a call for reporters to pay more attention to international events.

"There is too much media happening now. And this puts a new importance for all of us, and be able to manage our attention, and also decide for what is true, what is relevant, what matters. "
