Some Protesters in Hong Kong to Withdraw; Classes to Resume
   2014-10-06 07:42:02    CRIENGLISH.com      Web Editor: Fu

Classes at high schools in downtown Hong Kong are set to resume today as per normal, following negotiations among the government and protesters occupying parts of the city.

While secondary classes in Wan Chai and parts of Central will resume later today, kindergartens and primary schools are still going to remain shut down.

The partial resumption of schools follows a pledge by certain members of the so-called Occupy movement to voluntarily withdraw from their occupation around the Hong Kong government's offices in the area.

Police in Hong Kong have held a news conference, denying rumors the authorities have teamed up with the criminal underworld in an attempt to try to break the protests.

Hui Chun-tak is with the Hong Kong police.

"There were reports accusing us of turning a blind eye to underworld gang atrocities or even of working with them; these are all charges fabricated out of thin air. The accusations are unfair to all front-line officers who stick to what they do and make unremitting efforts at work."

The protests in Hong Kong erupted last week by those opposed to Beijing's plans for universial sufferage for choosing the SAR's new Chief Executive in 2017.
