China's National Day is celebrated every year on October 1, to commemorate the founding of New China on the day of 1949 with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square.

In 1999, the government decided to start a weeklong holiday around Oct. 1, primarily hoping the "Golden Week" can help expand the domestic tourism market and allow people to make long-distance family visits.

However, there have been some controversies over whether the Golden Week should be kept, due to the heavy traffic jam and overcrowded sightseeing spots.

92.7 million people are expected to travel by train during this year's National Day holiday.
